The four-way cross combines the Sacred Heart, Miraculous, St. Joseph and St. Christopher medals. Each image has a distinct meaning and rich faith legacy.
Top: Sacred Heart of Jesus, which depicts Him pointing to His exposed heart which is crowned with thorns. Based on the reported visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a 17th century French Visitation nun, it signifies the sacrificial love and mercy Christ has for humanity.
Bottom: The Miraculous Medal references the earliest biblical prophecy of the Jewish messiah found in Genesis 3:15. The medal shows the Virgin Mary standing on top of the world crushing a snake. Mary represents the origin of Jesus; her placement on top of the globe signifies Christ's kingship over the world; and her crushing the snake symbolizes Jesus' ultimate victory over evil.
Left: An image of St. Joseph holding a lily and the infant Jesus is depicted on the left part of the cruciform. St. Joseph is honored for his guardianship and protection (as Jesus' foster father) and his righteousness and purity (as represented by the lily).
Right: This image shows St. Christopher carrying the Christ child on his back over rushing water. The medal has a three-fold significance: Christians must always carry the teachings of Jesus with them; should be willing to help others in times of trouble; and may ask St. Christopher to pray for them during long journeys.
