France / early to mid 1900s (1”)

STRENGTH / BRAVERY: This wonderful medal is believed to be from the early to mid 1900s. The front is a profile of Joan of Arc and the reverse is wording in French: DOMREMY ORLEANS REIMS ROUEN. Domremy is where she was born in 1412, Orleans is one of her famous victories, Reims is where the King of France was crowned and Rouen is where she was burnt at the stake by the British in 1431.

Nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans," Joan of Arc is a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. She was born to a peasant family and received visions of the ArchangelMichael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent Joan to the siege of Orléans. She gained prominence after the siege was lifted in only nine days. Several additional swift victories led to Charles VII's coronation at Reims. On 23 May 1430, she was captured and then put on trial by the English on a variety of charges. She was convicted on May 30, 1431 and burned at the stake when she was 19 years old. Twenty-five years after her execution, Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr.

This medal was hand cast in solid bronze from a 20th century antique or vintage piece and antiqued to restore its original patina
